Tipperary politicians are beginning to kick-off on the campaign trail

With talks of the next General Election growing increasingly loud, Tipperary politicians are beginning to kick-off on the campaign trail and it’s time to start thinking about your vote.

After Tipperary North and South were united for the 2016 and 2020 General Elections, the county has once again been split into two three-seater constituencies for the upcoming election.

To recap, Local Elections which occurred just over four months ago in June, saw many Independent candidates top the polls with 14 candidates elected. The two largest parties were Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael with ten candidates elected each, Labour came next with three candidates followed by Sinn Féin at two and Workers and Unemployed at one.

These elections revealed the ones to watch as the Labour Party which gained two new councillors in Killenaule’s Michael ‘Chicken’ Brennan and Nenagh’s Louise Morgan Walsh along with Newport’s Fiona Bonfield easily keeping her seat. Fianna Faíl also gained a seat which saw them tie for largest party with Fine Gael.

Sinn Féin on the other hand, which saw a tremendous rise in popularity in the last General Election, seem to have lost steam in Tipperary with no new councillors elected. South Tipperary has two currently sitting TDs in Cashel’s Martin Browne (SF) and Newcastle’s Mattie McGrath (Ind), if both were to run again (which Browne has confirmed he will do) that would leave one guaranteed open space.

Cllr Michael Murphy (FG), Cllr Imelda Goldsboro, Cllr Michael ‘Chicken’ Brennan (Lab), Cllr John O’Heney (Ind) and Nadine Webster (Ind) have all announced they will be running.

North Tipperary’s seats are currently full with Alan Kelly (Lab), Jackie Cahill (FF) and Michael Lowry (Ind) holding seats. Kelly is the only one of the three so far to confirm that he will run again.

Seats are sought after by Cllr Phyll Bugler (FG), Iva Pocock (Greens) and Dan Harty (SF).

Although a date for the next General Election has yet to be revealed, it’s being speculated as coming as early as November 22.
