Michael Ryan: Former Tipperary manager who bears the popular surname
A lecture on The History of the Ryan Clan of Tipperary and Limerick between 1200- 1700, will be delivered in Borrisoleigh Community Centre on Monday, March 6, by Derek Ryan.
While not the most prevalent surname in Ireland, it is in the county of Tipperary .
The census of 1911 lists over 11,600 Ryans in the county.
The genealogy records show that between the years of 1864 and 1922, a total of 23,348 births within county Tipperary were registered to the surname of Ryan.
Such is the prevalence of the Ryan name in Tipperary, that often times the addition of a nickname is required to distinguish one family from another.
The talk briefly looks at the origin of the O’Ryans in Idrone in Carlow.
It details some of the major events in history of the O'Mulryans in Owney and Owneybeg from the 1200s to 1700s.
It considers whether the O’Ryans and O’Mulryans are one and the same and when and why the O’Mulryans came to the Tipperary / Limerick region. It also reviews important places and archaeological sites such as castles relating to the Ryans.
Derek Ryan is chairperson of Arra Historical and Archaeological Society. He completed a Diploma in Archaeology at NUIG in 2017.
He has a broad interest in archaeology, history and folklore around Tipperary and runs a Facebook page called The Tipperary Antiquarian.
The talk begins at 8pm; admission, €5.
