Six designs from Tipperary schools have been chosen to compete at this year's Dublin final of Junk Kouture in May.

The designs were chosen at the Junk Kouture regional finals on March 8-9.

The Tipperary designs chosen are as follows

  • Drowning Duchess by Eabha Byrnes from St Anne's Secondary School created from pool inflatable and old scrap clothing.
  • Golden Future by Zoe Prou and Ailise Fitzgerald from Patrician Presentation Secondary School created from shopping receipts, carpet and phone books.
  • The Eye of the Beholder by Zoe Whelan, Lauren Egan and Shauna Walsh from Ursuline Secondary School, Thurles created from tents, filter socks, pipes and copper.
  • Note Worthy by Katie Hanamy and Lilly Nesbitt from Ursuline Secondary School, Thurles created from old sheet music, eyelets and an old violin.
  • MalWear by Coilin Doris and Michael Quinlisk from Borrisokane Community College created from soccer balls, seat belts, hurling helmet and hangers.
  • Tissues and Tiaras by Eva Holmes, Kathlyn Lahart and Aurelija Vinslauskaite from Cashel Community School created from hand-washed and used baby wipes, a hula hoop and curtain netting.

1,200 haute-couture designs made from 100% recycled materials by post-primary students entered the 13th year of the creative programme in Ireland.

From this, 300 designs were shortlisted and aired on Junk Kouture’s YouTube and TikTok channel for the 2023 Regional Finals.

During the showcase, eighty was the magic number, as eighty creations crafted by young designers aged 13 -18 years from across the North, South, East, South-East and West of Ireland were chosen to represent their region at the Dublin City Final taking place this May.

Taking to one of Ireland’s most prestigious stages, Tipperary’s six finalist teams will face stiff competition from over 70 other entries from across the country in this year’s Dublin City Final.

Ursuline Secondary School’s design designs will compete with St Anne’s Secondary School, Patrician Presentation School, Borrisokane Community College as well as Cashel Community School in a bid to secure a space at the inaugural World Final of Junk Kouture where Irish finalists will compete with their fellow creative peers from Paris, Milan, NYC, London and Abu Dhabi.

The Regional Finals can be watched back on Junk Kouture’s YouTube channel and details of the Dublin City Final this May including date, venue and tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
