Tipp hurlers play a key role in New York's victory over Mayo in the Connacht Hurling League final

New York hurlers celebrated their history-making Connacht Hurling League victory, and they owe the win in no small part to several Tipperary hurlers who played key roles in the famous victory.

The New York side won the league for the first time with a 2-25 to 2-12 over Mayo at the GAA Air Dome in Galway on Saturday, with Tipp men AJ Willis, Ruadhan Mulrooney (both Portroe), Colin O'Brien (Silvermines), and James McCormack (Borris-Ileigh) who all started in the brilliant win.

It was the second year that New York competed in the Connacht Hurling League.

New York scored the first point of the game and dominated the match from the outset. Martin Cullen and Ger McPartland scored one goal for New York while co-captain David Mangan scored an incredible 13 points for the side.

Celebrations began as soon as the final whistle blew, with Frank Sinatra's New York, New York ringing out through the Air Dome.

Co-captain and Galway man Darragh Hynes said: "We put in a savage effort there. At Gaelic Park, the county board has backed us and we have a great management team in place."

Manager Richie Hartnett said he now has his sights set on competing in the Lory Meagher Cup in 2025.
