Tipperary animal rescue closes its doors to owner-surrendered dogs

A Tipperary rescue has said it is no longer taking in owner-surrendered dogs “for the foreseeable future.”

The Haven Rescue posted on social media that it will concentrate on dogs from pounds and greyhounds from trainers.

They said they made the decision because of abuse they have received online and by phone.

They said on social media:

“This is a post we did not want to have to write, but unfortunately, the last few days have made us sit back and think.......It’s with great sadness that we are no longer going to take in dogs from owner surrenders for the foreseeable future.

“We are not here to receive nasty comments or messages or to take really abusive phone calls which has been happening recently because people don't like what we say on a post, or because they feel we are judging them.. to be honest if you sign a surrender form to us and state the reason as " we don't have the time anymore " and we post the dog for rehoming as "family no longer had time to look after the dog"...

“We are not getting at you.”

THE HAVEN

The Haven is a volunteer-run animal rescue in north Tipperary.

Each year they run adoption days in Nenagh, last month being their most recent.

Last month co-founder Jenny Nolan told Tipperarylive that they were receiving 15-20 surrender requests a day.

“And where do you put 15 to 20 dogs every day? It’s a crazy volume of dogs,” said Jenny.

In addition to space, all dogs The Haven takes in require veterinary care.

That might be chips, vaccines or even injuries.

There is a huge cost in terms of time, space and money to the volunteer-based organisation

She asked that those taking in dogs consider the needs of the breed, their own lifestyles and the next ten years.

The theme of last month's adoption day was Rejects for Rehoming.

This does not mean that they are not good dogs, only that they had to leave their homes.
