Although he may be beyond running for the County Council, Alan Kelly TD has had a big weekend in Tipperary as Labour Party figurehead in the county.

A long-time Labour Party member and a leader of the party for two years, he has been through thick and thin with them.
Kelly is also a native to the Nenagh area and a consistent voice when it comes to issues there.

So, the fact that three seats were won this weekend by his fellow party members, including Nenagh’s Louise Morgan Walsh, is a great win for him and a great win for Labour in the region.

Back in 2019, the Labour Party had four candidates in the race, including Cllr Louise Morgan Walsh. However it was only Newport LEA’s Cllr Fiona Bonfield that came out successful at the time.

This time around, four candidates ran on behalf of Labour and three were elected to Tipperary County Council.

Cllr Fiona Bonfield will be joined on the council by Cllr Morgan Walsh and Carrick-on-Suir’s first time electee, Cllr Michael “Chicken” Brennan.

Speaking about the Labour Party’s success, Alan Kelly TD commented: “Absolutely delighted with three seats that we really targeted and I also want to acknowledge Jordan Lewis in Roscrea who didn’t get elected.”

“Fiona again surpassed the quota with a huge surplus. Michael was 22 votes short of his quota (on the first count), an absolutely incredible performance honouring the legacy of his uncle Neddy Brennan who was a councillor for 33 years and Louise Morgan Walsh who we stood with here five years ago and missed out by a few votes has now been elected for Nenagh today so we are absolutely thrilled."

“You know, uniquely in Ireland, here in Tipperary, the Labour Party has trebled their seats so we’re delighted here in Tipperary.”

“The Labour Party is strong, the Labour Party is growing and we’re going to go from strength to strength in the coming years.”

With Cllr Louise Morgan Walsh on board in Nenagh now, the influence of the Labour Party will increase and indeed there could be a promising future on the horizon for the party all going well.
