'Something needs to be done' - Fireworks causing serious concern in Tipperary

Locals express concern and frustration over late night fireworks in residential areas

Fireworks

There has been a significant number of complaints over late night fireworks in the Nenagh area in recent weeks with a number of reports of fireworks being let off very late into the night on several separate occasions.

The reports in Nenagh began just over a week ago with one person posting on social media "What's going on in Nenagh, sounds like shooting?".

On August 18, 'An Garda Síochána Tipperary' posted on Facebook saying:

"A Firework display can be great entertainment but in Ireland this must be done under license because someone licensed to do it would know that it is not acceptable to let of fireworks in a residential estate. Not only are you breaking the law by letting off fireworks when you are not authorised to do so but you are also saying to your neighbours that you don’t really care about their right to live in peace and harmony in their own home.
"Please stop letting off fireworks in residential estates, we don’t want to put an end to your celebrations but if you disrupt others and are caught you will be prosecuted and then there will be some ‘fireworks’ in court before a judge.
"Be a good neighbour."
However, since then, the reports seem to have only grown in number, at least in Nenagh.
In recent days, social media posts were shared online after a dog went missing locally after being spooked following another round of fireworks late at night and unfortunately the beloved family pet was later found dead on the Limerick motorway.
Social media users reacted to the unfortunate news online with one user saying "It's ridiculous... they wait till midnight! Something needs to be done. No respect for others. Very sad about the pet.. I'm sorry to whoever lost their pet... Fireworks send dogs and other animals into a confused frenzy, it harms birds too and confuses their sense of direction. It's senseless."
Another posted, "They were going off all day yesterday, I have been hearing fireworks on this side of town today since about 2 PM ... The fireworks started in earnest July but have been continuously present all year. This is the worst year that I can remember."
