The Tipperary County Board have organised the latest edition of the Tipperary Laochra Gael awards ceremony, which is set to take place next Sunday night, November 27th in the Semple Stadium Dome at 4.30pm.
This is the 18th edition of the awards which will honour 27 recipients who have made outstanding contributions to Tipperary GAA over the years, and is a fitting ceremony to reward the efforts of the volunteers spread throughout the county.
Founded back in 2003, The inaugural meeting of Cumann na Sean Ghael, Coiste took place in Hayes’s Hotel, Thurles, and it was agreed that approximately 40 annual presentations would be made, i.e. an average of 10 per division.
Since then, the consensus was that the general public should be asked to nominate suitable persons and justify why they were considered worthy, but there is now a committee in place to decide on the winners which is made up of outgoing County Secretary Tim Floyd, County Chairman John Costigan, along with Seamus McCarthy, Noel Morris, Michael Bourke, Sean Nugent, and Seamus King.
The awards will all be presented on the night, while the ceremony will have a special guest of honour in the form of John Tierney of Shannon Rovers, who will act as a guest speaker at the event.
John has been involved at all levels in the Association with his club, from which he progressed to administration at North and county level, while in later years, he became very involved with the Tipperary Supporters club.
As an administrator he was North juvenile secretary 1981 to 1982 and county juvenile secretary level 1982 to 1985. Elected vice-chairman of the senior board 1985-1987, he was elected chairman for the period 1988-1989.
With work commitments taking priority, John took a few years away from administration before becoming involved with the Tipperary Supporters club in 1999.
