Nenagh councillors welcome signing of contract for water treatment plants in two towns

Nenagh councillors have welcomed the signing of the €19m contract for the upgrade to waste water treatment plants in Ballina and Newport.

The news was announced just before Christmas by Irish Water who have signed the contract with Ward and Burke and Tipperary County Council.

Works are due to start in Ballina in January and expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

Works in Newport are expected to commence mid-2023 and expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

Welcoming the news, Newport’s Cllr Fiona Bonfield said that the investment in the plants was “great”.

Cllr Joe Hannigan said that everybody in Ballina and Newport had been “fighting to get that happen”.

However, he wondered when the upgrades would come for Cloughjordan, Ardcroney and Ballycommon, where the current systems were having a “serious impact” on the villages.

District manager Marcus O’Connor said it was “absolutely great” to have the contracts signed.

Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill said: “It’s brilliant to see this contract being signed for crucial wastewater infrastructure upgrades for Ballina and Newport. This new upgrade will eliminate the discharge of poorly treated wastewater and improve the water quality for the towns."
