The late John Bruton
Tipperary TD Michael Lowry has paid tribute to former Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader John Bruton, who passed away this Tuesday.
The Thurles TD, who became an Independent Dáil Deputy when barred by Mr Bruton in 2001 from running on the party ticket in the next general election, said in a statement that it was "with great sadness" that he had learned of the passing of Mr Bruton.
"John was a man of exceptional intellect and ability. He had a curiosity about world affairs. He read and took advice to ensure that he had a full grasp and understanding of even the most complex issues.
"He was an outstanding colleague. Always available to offer support and encouragement. He was genuine sincere and unassuming. He was a man of high values and enormous integrity.
"He gave a lifetime of commitment to Fine Gael and was an outstanding Ambassador for his beloved country. He served the people of Meath and Ireland with honour and distinction.
"My sympathy to his wife, Finola, who was central to his life and his career. He will be greatly missed by his family.
"Peace to his gentle soul. Farewell my friend."
In 1994, then Fine Gael Deputy Lowry was appointed Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications in the Rainbow Coalition Government led by Mr Bruton.
