North Tipperary's ambulance service is seriously under resourced and lacks adequate numbers of paramedics and drivers, a local councillor has warned.
The monthly meeting of the Municipal Council for the Thurles and Roscrea area heard from Thurles based Councillor Jim Ryan, who said there were no ambulances on standby for recent concerts and matches in Semple Stadium and that ambulance crews in Thurles, Roscrea and across Tipperary are pleading for help.
“The ambulance service in our District is at crisis point and the personnel, the drivers, paramedics and staff say they have had enough”, Cllr. Ryan told the meeting on Monday.
“During times when we have large events in Thurles there is no ambulance service in Tipperary because they've been called out to different counties because of the lack of staff”, Cllr. Ryan said.
“I want to make it clear it is no fault of the crews - they are out there and they are under severe pressure and are stressed out. They can't take anymore and the First Responder in Thurles is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week even when he is off duty and is usually the first person at the scene of any accident because the crew in Thurles are already called out - in one case to Wicklow.
“This is an absolute scandal and it needs to be raised and I want the council to raise this issue to get it resolved”, Cllr. Ryan said.
He proposed the local authority write to the Minister for Health and the HSE and suggested the solution is to recruit more paramedics and drivers to adequately staff the ambulance bases in Roscrea and Thurles.
“We all know the crisis that is out there in the ambulance service - it can take an hour or two, or in some cases even more for an ambulance to arrive at the scene of an accident.
“We had a match and a concert here recently and I was told there is no ambulance available in Tipperary for those events, which is so alarming.
“Our crews are under severe pressure and they could be called away to another county in some cases”, Cllr. Ryan said.
