A fantastic mural dedicated to the late Shane MacGowan has begun to take its final shape in Nenagh town.
Nenagh Municipal District Council were determined to create a fitting tribute to the former Pogues frontman who died last November.
To honour the singer, the County Council sanctioned a €15,000 grant for a special mural in Nenagh.
Tipperary town-based artist Neil O’Dwyer started work on the piece several weeks ago, and locals were hugely impressed by the work being done to date and the project is set to be completed within the next three weeks.
The idea for the mural arose earlier this year as Tipperary officials wanted a public celebration of the singer’s life and his deep love of Tipperary and also wanted to create a focal point in Nenagh where Pogues fans and friends of the singer could come to remember him.
The MacGowan family were consulted about the image of the singer to be used for the mural. When the mural idea was first proposed, MacGowan’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, said he would have been thrilled at the concept.
The Pogues singer was 65 years old when he died in Dublin after a long illness.
