Borrisokane evictions halted today in a big win for community action

The decision by the Government to evict the IPA residents has been halted for now

Borrisokane

Following last night's protest in Borrisokane, local TD Alan Kelly posted on social media to confirm that the six families who were due to face evictions today will be able to remain in Borrisokane at least for now with further talks due to take place.

He said:

"The decision of the Government to evict the IPA residents with status tomorrow despite a 2019 agreement that said they could stay with HAP/Rent has been halted.
"Following constant representations I made to the Government I was informed by Minister Roderic O’Gorman late this afternoon that there would be no evictions tomorrow and that they would work with Tipperary Co Co and other agencies to find solutions locally.
"The Government now needs to sit down with the local committee and public representatives around the table to plan a way forward.
"I want to thank the Borrisokane Liaison Committee for all their work on this issue and the people of Borrisokane and surrounds for their solidarity. I would also like to acknowledge other public representatives support and that of local businesses.
"We have had some positive news today but there is much more work to do."
Many of the Borrisokane residents - including over 30 children - of Riverside Apartments have been issued notice to leave by September 5.

The reason they are facing eviction is that they have been given “Leave to Remain” status.

This means they no longer hold refugee status or subsidiary protection and are no longer entitled to live in housing provided by International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) because they have been granted permission to stay in Ireland.

The people of Riverside Apartments, their local friends and neighbours in Borrisokane and a number of local politicians are continuing to campaign in the hope that they will be able to remain in Borrisokane where they have become integral members of the local community.
