The Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland, Dr Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, has extended her thanks to American President Donald Trump for the peace initiative that had led to a ceasefire in the war-torn area of Gaza.

Speaking during her visit to The Thinking Centre in Clonmel, she described the ceasefire as “still fragile” but she believes that President Trump is “serious” about the peace plan.

She said she still has hope and Palestinians would continue to fight for their rights in conjunction with countries including Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and Qatar, as well as the Arab League.

“Everybody is deciding on behalf of Palestinians. But nothing will be implemented for Palestine unless Palestinians are part of it. This is where we want the international community to support our just cause,” she stated, adding that Palestine’s right to self-determination must be respected. If this right is denied, then no plan for Gaza or the Palestinian people would be successful.

The ambassador stressed that Palestinians were opposed to all kinds of killing and the taking of hostages.

And while the eyes of the world had been on the war in Gaza, Palestinians were also suffering in the West Bank, the larger of the two Palestinian territories that make up the State of Palestine.

She said that in Europe and throughout the world, there had been a move towards imposing sanctions on Israel. However, she said that the Trump Peace Plan was launched to protect Israel and avoid sanctions, and in order for Israel not to be isolated or held accountable for the war in Gaza.

It was a plan that had been prepared without input from the Palestinians. They needed to work with the EU and the international community, and things would not move in the right direction without further pressure being applied on Israel President Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli government, she said.
