Options being discussed for dangerous junction on road in Tipperary

Work needs to be carried out 'as soon as possible,' says Cllr Ambrose

Options being discussed for dangerous junction on road in Tipperary

Cllr Ambrose says that the number of accidents at the junction is increasing

Cllr Siobhán Ambrose has welcomed the latest update from the Clonmel Borough District Engineer in response to her ongoing motions regarding both the junction and the bus stop at the Ormonde Stores in Kilsheelan.

According to Cllr Ambrose, Sweco Ireland, the architecture and engineering consultants who have been tasked to look at this project, have been out on site.

Cllr Ambrose says they are putting together suitable options and the engineer is hoping that she will have those proposals back before Christmas.

Cllr Ambrose has also been told that neither of these issues will be resolved overnight. Because the junction is on the main Clonmel-Kilkenny road, it means that Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) will have to be involved and, as all bus stops are in the charge of the National Transport Authority (NTA), it means that they will also have to be consulted.

However, Cllr Ambrose is optimistic that both of these issues can be progressed.

“I have been working with local residents, the community council and local businesses in the area regarding both of these issues.

Cllr Ambrose thanked both the current and the previous Borough Engineers who have been working on this project with her.

"As a result of my representations, the council applied and subsequently received funding to employ Sweco consultants to survey both the junction and the bus stop and to come up with options for both areas. Due to the ever-frequent number of accidents at this junction, we need to see what measures can be put in place to avoid future accidents at this junction.

"We also need to provide a proper bus stop at this location for residents living in this area".

Cllr Ambrose said that she is looking forward to studying the consultants' options for the junction and the bus stop when they are completed.

"Hopefully, the TII and the NTA will not take long to give their opinions on the proposed plans, as in the interest of safety we need to carry out works to both the junction and the bus stop as soon as possible".
