BREAKING: Tipperary couple on RTÉ TV series after retrofitting home in just two days

A brand new TV series focusing on retrofitting older Irish homes continues on RTÉ One on Tuesday, November 25 and features a Tipperary couple who completed a retrofit of their house in just two days.

Heat My Home sees building engineer Kieran McCarthy travelling around Ireland, checking out homes that are getting energy upgrades.

Throughout the series, he shows homeowners what’s possible and what costs are involved. He also breaks down the technical jargon, from heat pumps to H-VAC, to make it easy to follow.

In the fourth episode, Kieran meets Michael and Emma Morrissey from Lisronagh near Clonmel, who wanted to bring the energy rating of their dormer bungalow from a D1 to at an A2.

Kieran McCarthy said: “Some retrofits can be completed remarkably quickly depending on the measures taken. It’s about understanding what’s achievable and making smart, tailored choices that suit your home and your budget. Those decisions can transform the comfort, efficiency and long-term running costs of any property. In Michael and Emma’s case, they had already insulated the attic and pumped the walls two years ago, but the house was still cold and drafty. Now, instead of having a home that was difficult to heat, they have a highly-efficient A2 rated house.”

Emma Morrissey added: “We replaced the windows and doors, added ventilation, installed an air-to-water pump, new radiators and solar panels. Now that the temperatures have dropped, we can really feel the impact. The house is so cosy, no draughts, no cold spots, just a steady, comfortable warmth throughout. It’s not just the comfort either, we already feel more in control of our energy use. It’s been a huge upgrade for us and we’re absolutely delighted with the results.”

It airs on Tuesday at 8.30pm on RTÉ One.

Kieran McCarthy started life as an engineer qualifying from UCC in Civil Engineering in 1996.

He worked with several blue chip building companies in Ireland and the UK before setting up his own design and building company KMC Homes in 2004.

He was the co-presenter of RTE’s Cheap Irish Homes.
