Tipperary North TD Michael Lowry was the first public representative to part-sponsor a calendar produced by well-known Scariff based photographer James Treacy in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.
The calendar features photos of landmarks in Limerick City and Limerick County and includes aerial shots of Limerick City and the New Bridge in Killaloe on the Clare/Tipperary Border and another Bridge that divides Limerick and Co Clare better known as O’Briens Bridge.
There are also a few night time shots of Landmarks around Limerick including King John's Castle and the Treaty Stone.
The calendar is a 2027 Limerick calendar and James told us: “the reason we plan so far ahead is because we have a year to sell the calendars so they won’t go out of date very fast and this will give me time to sell them. If they go out of date, they are worthless”.
He says “I first met Michael Lowry when I was a Press Photographer covering the official opening of the new bridge in Killaloe last May and I took his photo with the Mayor of Clare and the Mayor of Tipperary and I am delighted he put money into the calendar which will go towards the printing costs”.
He said “it’s great to see a politician who is not in my constituency put money into it”.
This is the second calendar that James has produced for the Irish Cancer Society and he held a special mass celebrated by the Bishop of Killaloe Bishop Fintan Monahan in the Cathedral in Ennis in 2018 and he has raised over €2,000 in total so far.
He said “As latest figures estimate, over 45,000 people in Ireland will develop cancer this year, and demand for their services is growing all the time.”
The money raised will go towards vital services including:
- Cancer Information Service – offering free, confidential advice, support and information to anyone concerned about cancer and responding to nearly 10,000 enquiries per year.
- Patient Care & Support - providing emotional and practical support to men and women who have been diagnosed with cancer.
- Nursing Services - caring for people with cancer at every stage in their illness. Their night nurses, oncology liaison nurses, and homecare teams deliver the highest standards of care to patients and their families, every day all over Ireland, free of charge.
- Prevention and Education – advising on cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment or follow-on care, empowering people facing cancer to cope with the disease.
- Cancer Research - funding vital Irish research that will have a significant impact on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
- The Society would be very grateful for any assistance you can offer in terms of purchasing the calendar and it costs €15 per copy and 50% of the profits go directly to the Irish Cancer Society.

James says: “We are holding an official launch of the calendar in February but we haven’t a date set yet.”
He says: “I am waiting for the Christmas Tree in Adare to be erected for the December photo then as soon as I have this photo taken and which will be a night time shot, we will go to print”.
