Plan unveiled to reopen golf course in Tipperary next month

County Tipperary Golf and Country Club members attended a meeting in the Community Hall in Dundrum last week, when they were informed of the progress made in getting the golf course open again

Following a packed meeting of County Tipperary Golf and Country Club members in the Community Hall in Dundrum last week, it became very apparent that there is real support to reopen the golf course.

The plan is to open the golf course on Sunday January 18 (weather permitting) with the Captain’s Drive-in.

The finance committee, which was drawn from the ladies and the gents committees, has worked very hard over several months under the leadership of Captain Danny O’Dwyer and Lady Captain Marie Graves. While there were a number of meetings with the representative of the liquidators, Captain Danny has done trojan work in negotiating the final agreement.

The meeting heard a very detailed plan to open the golf course from Joe Murray, who has put an amount of work into the project.

Speaking to the meeting, Joe outlined the budget of income and expenses that had been very carefully considered by the finance committee over many meetings.

He said it will depend on revenue from membership, green fees, the driving range and the return of golf societies. While there will be a number of payment plans available, it is generally accepted that full payment up front by the many committed members will be a big advantage in making real progress at the early stages. There will also be a voluntary effort required from members, which seems to be very forthcoming.

It is obvious from the large turnout at this meeting, plus those who phoned to say they were in full support, that reopening the golf course in Dundrum has the full support of the members and the local community in Dundrum and surrounding area.

The new structure will be a management committee, with responsibility for all the operations going forward. The Ladies committee and the Men’s committee will be as heretofore.

The many members of the finance committee played a vital role in getting this far. The already mentioned Captains played a real captains role. Also to the fore were President Jenny Lawrence and Vice Captains Colm Taylor and Judy Hayes, who are tasked with leading the club through 2026 with the help of their Vice Captains Sean Carroll and Catherine Moloney. The club was also helped greatly by a former captain and accountant Richard O’Keeffe.

Captain Danny O’Dwyer thanked everyone for coming and said with their support there would be a very satisfactory 2026 playing golf in Dundrum once again.
