Nicole Griffin earned a place on the Bachelor of Education (Gaeilge) programme at University College Cork following exceptional academic results, demonstrating a strong commitment to the Irish language.
The scholarship is one of ten awarded each year, based directly on performance in the Leaving Certificate examinations.
The award was formally recognised at the scholarship ceremony, where its significance in supporting the next generation of Irish language teachers was emphasised.
The BEd Gaeilge programme is designed to meet the increasing demand for qualified teachers within the post-primary sector.
A UCC spokesperson explained the importance of the scholarship: “This degree recognises the urgency to train good Irish teachers for the 2nd level industry.
It is our great luck and privilege that COGG (An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta) is willing to sponsor this degree by funding a yearly scholarship to the value of €2,000 per person to ten students of Irish in BEd Gaeilge, on the basis of their Leaving Cert results.”
The sponsorship from COGG (The Council for Gaeltacht and Gaelscoil Education) underscores the national priority of nurturing high-calibre graduates such as Griffin.
At the ceremony, CCS Deputy Principal John Murray praised Griffin’s dedication:
“Throughout her time at Cashel CS, Nicole consistently demonstrated a deep passion for Gaeilge, engaging enthusiastically in cultural activities and setting a high standard for her peers.
We are very proud of her achievement. She is a very worthy recipient and we wish her well for her future.”
