The Winter solstice celebration at Knockroe Passage Tomb near Ahenny will take place this Sunday, December 21.
Visitors can experience the dawn alignment at 8:40am and the sunset alignment at 3:40pm, weather permitting.

Stewarded parking will be available nearby, and attendees are encouraged to allow an additional twenty minutes for arrival. Visitors are advised to wear wellies or good boots as this is a rural location.

Guided tours highlighting the rich history and heritage of the Lingaun Valley will also be offered. These will include a walk along the Windgap Village Loop, departing from the community centre in Windgap at 11am, and a tour of the Slatequarries from the Ormond Quarry at 1.45pm.
As the solstice falls on a Sunday this year, the usual refreshment stops—including the Lakeside Tea Rooms in Windgap, the Auld Mill Bakery in Grangemockler, and Owning House—will not be open.
Hot takeaway beverages will be available from Walsh’s Shop in Windgap, Pete’s Shop in Kilmoganny until 1pm, and outlets in Callan, Carrick-on-Suir, and Piltown.
Evening meals may be booked in advance at the Dizzy Goat Restaurant in Kilkieran.
