'Mr Athletics' in Tipperary club has been honoured in annual sports awards

John Flynn can be found down at “the track” in Moyne most nights of the week, such is his fondness for athletics

John Flynn has been part of the athletics scene in Tipperary since he first captured the County Novice Cross Country title in 1965 in Holycross.

He has now been rewarded for that long service with the Tipperary United Sports Panel's Jimmy Cooney Lifetime Achievement Award. John and the other Tipperary amateur sports stars of the year will receive their Annerville awards, sponsored by Bulmers, at the United Sports Panel's annual function, which will be held at the Talbot Hotel Clonmel on Saturday night, January 10.

In the last 60 years he has continued to dedicate his life to athletics in the county and that title in 1965 was the start of a stellar athletics career that saw him win several honours at county, provincial and national level.

After his own career came to an end, John has been the “Mr Athletics” of Moyne AC. Back in 1978 he was a guiding light in bringing a ladies section to the club and this section has repaid him over the years with outstanding success, including 10 County Senior cross country titles in a row from 1986/87 to 1996/97, National Novice and Intermediate cross country titles and numerous county cross country and road championships.

He is involved as a coach to the club’s juvenile athletes and has been instrumental in the success of young athletes at county, Munster and national level, particularly at track and field where the Under 10 Girls 4 x 100 metres team won national gold in 2023. He continues to be a driving force behind the club’s senior athletes, encouraging and supporting them and instilling pride in the green and gold singlet.

He has served on the committee of the club since 1973 and has held many of the main positions, driving the club forward into the force it is today.

John has also been an active member on the committees of Tipperary Athletics and Munster Athletics and is currently Moyne AC President and Tipperary Athletics President.

He can be found down at “the track” most nights of the week, such is his fondness for athletics. No doubt the facilities the club boasts today goes down to the sheer energy and effort put in by people such as John Flynn.
