Tusla PPFS team in North Tipperary were delighted to be awarded gold in the inaugural Tusla Excellence Awards for their work on and awareness project - Bringing Past Traveller Culture and Traditions in Mindful Parenting.

The Creative Mindfulness Project was a collaborative project between Tusla PPFS, HSE Traveller Primary Health Care Project in Nenagh and with the North Tipperary Development Company. This initiative aimed to give the Traveller women the skills to develop mindfulness strategies that they could utilise for their own emotional health and wellbeing and for the wellbeing of their children and families. This initiative also focused on promoting a positive relationship to bridge gaps and to enhance an understanding between members of the Travelling community and Tusla in North Tipperary.

The Traveller women involved are now using mindfulness practices in their everyday lives and using these skills in their parenting and with their families. This project has contributed to enhanced well-being for the group members. Overall, the Traveller women loved doing an activity which brought their community together in a calm, relaxing and safe environment.

Speaking of the winning the gold award, Fidelma Costello Child and Family Support Coordinator PPFS Tusla North Tipperary, said: “We are delighted to see such wonderful recognition of our mindfulness project with the HSE Traveller Primary Health Care Project in Nenagh and with the North Tipperary Development Company. The primary goal of this initiative was to provide an opportunity for the Traveller women to develop strategies to support their emotional wellbeing which they could also utilise in their parenting. It has been wonderful to see the positive results in the group, but also to see that the group are using the mindfulness skills in their day to day lives. In addition, the space allowed for a shared learning to occur regarding Tusla services and Traveller culture and traditions. This project has created connections between Tusla and the Traveller Community in North Tipperary that will positively enhance our relationships in the future.”

Bringing Past Traveller Culture and Traditions in Mindful Parenting was developed in line with the actions of the National Traveller and Roma Inclusion Strategy II 2024-2028 (NITRIS II).
