A total of 390 new safety speed camera zones will become operational nationwide from 1 January 2026, increasing the overall number of safety camera zones across Ireland to 1,901.
Several of the new and expanded zones will impact North Tipperary, including long sections of the M7 motorway and the Nenagh–Thurles road at Latteragh.
At Latteragh, a reduced speed limit of 60km/h is currently in place due to ongoing construction works, with speed enforcement to reflect these conditions.
An Garda Síochána in Tipperary has reiterated that the primary purpose of safety cameras is collision prevention, not enforcement for its own sake.
Gardaí say the cameras are designed to reduce speed-related collisions, lessen the severity of injuries, and ultimately save lives on Irish roads.
The expansion follows stark national road safety figures. 186 people have lost their lives on Irish roads so far in 2025, making it the highest number of road deaths in more than a decade.
Safety camera zones are located in speed enforcement zones, which are identified based on a proven history of speed-related collisions. Gardaí stress that these locations are selected using collision data and road safety analysis, rather than revenue considerations.
A full list of all safety camera zones, including those affecting Tipperary, is available on the Garda website, allowing motorists to familiarise themselves with enforcement locations ahead of the January 2026 rollout.
Road users in Tipperary are being urged to observe posted speed limits, particularly in areas affected by road works, and to drive with care as the new measures come into effect.
