Sean O'Connor was outstanding for Clonmel Commercials in the county quarter-final against Moyle Rovers

Sean O’Connor has emerged as one of Clonmel Commercials’ key players in recent seasons, and has won the 2025 Annerville award, sponsored by Bulmers, for Gaelic football.

He played no small part in getting the team across the line when they survived what was up to then their biggest challenge of the 2025 campaign, defeating close rivals Moyle Rovers by three points after a terrific extra-time tussle in the county quarter-final.

When they were in grave danger of crashing out of the championship, the Tipperary player converted a free three minutes into additional time to send an absorbing contest to extra-time. Grateful for that reprieve, Commercials kicked on in extra-time, when Sean scored two points, which formed part of his eight points total, including five from play, in the course of his brilliant performance.

From there it was onto the county semi-final, when the Tipperary player was top scorer with a goal and three points as Commercials had to summon all their reserves of experience to get past Upperchurch Drombane by four points.

The county final against Kilsheelan Kilcash was a one-sided affair. Helped by a contribution of six points from joint top scorer Sean O’Connor, Commercials cruised to a 21-point victory. It was a significant and an emotional day for the Clonmel club, who won a record 22nd senior title, as they remembered their former mentor Philly Ryan, who had passed away only three weeks previously.

The Annerville awards will be presented to the Tipperary amateur sports stars of the year by the Tipperary United Sports Panel at the Talbot Hotel Clonmel on Saturday night, January 10.

Tickets for the event are available from Sports Panel treasurer Ken Conway, email conwayken@eircom.net
