Long established as a fixture in the Irish walking calendar, the festival draws participants from across the country to explore routes through the Galtee Mountains and along the Slievenamuck ridge.
Organisers say the programme is designed to cater for walkers of all abilities, from those seeking gentle scenic routes to experienced hill walkers looking for a physical challenge.
This year’s festival will feature seven guided walks spread over the weekend, each graded by difficulty. All routes will begin and end at the Aherlow House Hotel, which will also host post-walk refreshments.
Proceedings get underway on Friday night, January 30th, with the Christ the King by Night walk. The evening route is known for its atmosphere, offering walkers a chance to experience the Glen of Aherlow after dark.
Saturday’s programme, on January 31st, includes three options. Group A walkers will tackle a 20km route along the Slievenamuck ridge, taking in expansive views across the surrounding countryside.
Group B will follow a 10km scenic trek to Lake Borheen, while Group C will complete the Tarbh loop, an 8km walk noted for its natural beauty.
The festival concludes on Sunday, February 1st, with a further set of guided walks. Group A participants will undertake the 14km Galty Horseshoe, widely regarded as one of the most demanding routes in the Galtees.
Group B will follow the Lough Curra Loop, aimed at advanced hill walkers, while Group C will complete a 12km trek from the Millennium Stone to Aherlow House.
An early bird discount is available, with €5 off the Saturday and Sunday walks for those who book in advance. Refreshments will be served at the Aherlow House Hotel following each walk.
With its mix of challenging mountain routes and accessible walking options, the Glen of Aherlow Winter Walking Festival continues to position itself as a winter highlight for the walking community, while showcasing the landscape of one of Tipperary’s best known outdoor destinations.
