Borris-in-Ossory has been mourning the loss of one of its oldest and most respected residents following the death of Dinny Lalor, Main Street, who passed away peacefully at his home earlier this month in his 102nd year.
Mr Lalor, who was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his death, was widely regarded as a symbol of longevity, independence and quiet dedication to parish life. Remarkably, he was still driving his car until just a few years ago, a detail that has been fondly recalled by neighbours as evidence of his sharp mind and independent spirit well into old age.
Predeceased by his sisters Mary and Bernadette, and brothers Bill, Paddy and Jimmy, Dinny is deeply mourned by his wife Therese, sons Vincent and Dom, grandchildren Jackie, Dean and Sean, great-grandchild Caragh, daughters-in-law Veronica and Eilish, as well as nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
His remains reposed at Guilfoyle’s Funeral Home in Castletown before being removed to St Canice’s Church, Borris-in-Ossory, where his Funeral Mass took place. Burial followed in Derrinsallagh Cemetery.

A deeply meaningful tribute was paid during the ceremony, with symbols of Dinny’s long and faithful life brought to the altar, including congratulatory letters and commemorative coins he received from the President of Ireland on reaching the ages of 100 and 101.
Dinny and his wife Therese were also honoured by the Church for their years of service, having received the Benemerenti Medal from the Pope in recognition of their long-standing commitment as sacristans at St Canice’s Church. The award, rarely bestowed, marked decades of quiet dedication to parish life.
Those who knew him described Dinny as a hard-working man who enjoyed a long, healthy retirement, remaining active and engaged in the community he loved. His passing marks the end of an era for Borris-in-Ossory, where he was a familiar and reassuring presence for generations.
