Plans have been submitted to Tipperary County Council for a large anaerobic digestion plant at Ballynilard, just outside Tipperary town.

The development, proposed by Andrew Kiely and Nephin Renewable Gas – Ballynilard Limited, aims to produce biomethane, carbon dioxide, and a bio-based fertiliser from local organic materials.

No objections have been submitted so far, although submissions remain open to the public. Tipperary County Council is expected to make a decision by March 15.

The facility would feature three digesters, two digestate storage structures, and a liquid feed tank. A reception hall, partly single-storey and partly two-storey, would house a laboratory, panel room, workshop, and storage areas.

Other key structures include pasteurisation tanks, nutrient recovery and CO2 processing units, biogas treatment and upgrading modules, a combined heat and power unit, and a two-storey office and administration building.

Associated works would cover parking, access roads, solar panels, drainage, landscaping, and other site infrastructure.

Manure, slurry, and other feedstocks are expected to come from local farms.

Nephin Renewable Gas – Ballynilard Limited is part of the Nephin Renewable Gas group, based in Tipperary town.

The company intends to contribute to Ireland’s decarbonisation goals and aims to become the country’s largest producer of indigenous biomethane, building on its existing role as the leading domestic natural gas producer.

No objections have been submitted so far, although the application remains open for public comment. Tipperary County Council is expected to make a decision by March 15.
