The Thurles Municipal District of the Tipperary County Council held a special meeting on Monday morning, January 26, in memory of the late Valerie Young.
Valerie passed away on January 22, following a short illness.

Members of the Thurles MD gathered in Thurles to pay their respects to Valerie.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Peggy Ryan opened the meeting by remarking that Valerie, a former town councillor, had served Templemore with great heart and determination.
She spoke of how Valerie was a major advocate for the shop local campaign, and that her impact on her home town of Templemore can still be felt today.
Cllr Eddie Moran, a fellow Team Lowry member, spoke of Valerie’s great work in Templemore, and remarked on her popularity in the community.
Valerie had canvassed with Cllr Moran previously, and he said that she will be greatly missed.
Cllr Sean Ryan said that he could tell Valerie was someone who was very committed to public service and wanted the best for the town of Templemore.
Cllr Micheál Lowry spoke of Valerie’s warmth and compassion, and how her commitment to others defined her life.
He spoke of the lasting legacy she was able to leave while serving a single term on the Town Council.

Speaking in regards to Team Lowry, Cllr Lowry said that Valerie was a treasured colleague and a huge influence on the group in recent years.
Cllr Shane Lee spoke of Valerie’s loyalty, and how she went about her work with great passion and dignity.
He said she fought her illness bravely and with great courage.
Cllr Willie Kennedy said that Valerie was always a very pleasant person, remarking on how whenever she was called on the phone, you would not need to give your name, as she knew who you were immediately.
Each of the councillors expressed their sympathies to Valerie’s husband Adrian, her daughter Sophie, her sons Geoffrey and David, and all other members of her family.
