Councillor Mairin McGrath is calling on residents to take a closer look at the new parking bylaws proposed by Tipperary County Council.
During the monthly Tipperary/Cahir district meeting, McGrath emphasised the need for more voices and greater public involvement in shaping these changes.
“People need to engage with the county bylaw process; only five have come in to date.
The draft 2026 parking bylaws for Tipperary, covering towns such as Clonmel, Nenagh, and Thurles, aim to standardise regulations across all nine towns. Key features include 20 minutes of free parking in designated areas, parking charges from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm Monday to Saturday, and free parking on Sundays. These changes aim to improve parking availability in town centres and provide lower rates for off-street parking.
The Council states that after reviewing all submissions, the bylaws will be presented at a Council meeting for approval. Implementation is planned for October 1st this year.
The proposal divides the towns into three groups, each with its own parking rates and options. Clonmel will have its own rates; Thurles and Nenagh will share another set, while Cashel, Cahir, Tipperary town, Carrick-on-Suir, Roscrea, and Templemore will have similar charges. Free parking will continue on Sundays, and charges will apply from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm Monday to Saturday. Each town will offer a mix of short-stay, medium-stay, and all-day parking at different price points.
Under the proposal, everyone would receive 20 minutes of free parking in every town, with off-street parking costing less than on-street options. In Tipperary town, charges would apply at the Market Yard and Abbey Street car parks, while free parking would still be available at Bank Place, Davis Street, and James Street. Currently, Cahir town centre offers two hours of free parking, but this would be reduced to 20 minutes under the new plan. The public is invited to share their feedback until 4:30 pm on March 13th, either by post to Liam Brett, Director of Services, Tipperary County Council, Civic Offices, Limerick Road, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary E45 AO99 or by emailing parkingbyelaws@tipperarycoco.ie
