Cllr Siobhán Ambrose says the town bus is “a lifeline for people”
A total of 269,714 journeys were made on Clonmel’s town bus service last year.
That figure was announced by Cllr Siobhán Ambrose at a meeting of Clonmel Borough District.
It was agreed at the meeting, following a request by Cllr Ambrose, that officials from the NTA (National Transport Authority) and Tipperary Transport Committee would be invited to attend a meeting to push the case for an extension of the service.
She said they should also look for an extension of the rural schemes to include other villages around Clonmel.
Cllr Ambrose, who’s a member of the Tipperary Transport Co-Ordination Committee, described the bus service as “a lifeline for people”.
It brought people into the town, including those who came in to socialise and who left their cars at home. It was so cost-effective because it’s a government initiative, she said.

Senior citizens travelled for free and passengers could pay using a card or cash. People in areas such as Old Bridge, Marlfield, Clerihan, Ard na Greine and Moangarriff hoped that they would be included in the next phase.
When they discussed vacant shop premises in the town, Cllr Ambrose said if they could double the number of passengers availing of the service when phase two was introduced it would be valuable in supporting the economic lifeblood of Clonmel.

District Mayor Pat English agreed that the bus service was a tremendous success. The community in the Old Bridge felt they had been left behind when the service was introduced and hoped their area would be included in the next phase.
The National Transport Authority (NTA) recently announced that six percent more passenger journeys were made across the Transport for Ireland (TFI) network in 2025 when compared to the previous year.
