The 35-year-old announced the news on Instagram on Monday evening with a simple message: “We’re married,” alongside a series of photographs from the day shared with her 617,000 followers.
Purcell, who hosts 2FM Breakfast with Carl Mullan and Aisling Bonner, received congratulatory messages from fellow broadcasters including Miriam O'Callaghan and Laura Fox. “Huge congratulations to you both - you both look wonderful and so happy, and you look truly magnificent,” O’Callaghan wrote.
The couple, who have been together since 2016, announced their engagement in August 2023. Desmond is a concert and events promoter, and the son of Denis Desmond, managing director of MCD Productions, and Caroline Downey, manager of the Irish musician Hozier. Zach has two siblings, Storm and Jett.
Speaking to the Irish Independent in November, Purcell explained her approach to planning the wedding. Invitations were created using the online design platform Canva and sent to guests via WhatsApp.
“We don’t want gifts as weddings can be such an expense for people,” she said. She also confirmed the ceremony would be “small” with “no hens, stags, bridesmaids, groomsmen or gifts.”
Purcell, who has published three cookbooks and two The Hike Life titles, and Desmond met at Electric Picnic through mutual friends. She recalled the engagement as a surprise.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, she said: “I didn’t see it coming because we’ve both been so busy, we’re sometimes passing ships in the night.
But we’d taken a few days off to go down the country in our campervan. I was suspicious when he said we could take in a nice sunset, because it’s normally me saying that. We went for dinner and he said let’s go for a walk afterwards.”
She added that Desmond had been “running ahead” looking for the ideal spot, leaving her initially puzzled.
The couple’s decision for an intimate ceremony aligns with Purcell’s previously stated view on wedding gifts. She has argued on Instagram that attending a wedding is sufficient as a present, noting the significant costs involved for guests including hotels, childcare, and outfits. “That’s loads of money,” she wrote.
