Explosion of colour as Tipperary artists explore Mexican culture and ceramics

Last Friday  Cahir Arts was delighted to launch a group show by a wonderful group of talented Tipperary lady artists in a very colourful opening night.

Stimulated by the desire to explore Mexican culture and ceramics, the group embarked on a journey towards Mexico and hopefully with the success of this extraordinary show they’ll get there.

The colours and customs of Mexico provide the impetus for a ceramics exhibition by Fethard potters at Cahir Arts. The diversity of work on display and the sheer explosion of colour bring a welcome ray of sunshine to start the spring exhibitions in Cahir Arts.

The artists were inspired by customs such as ex-votos, the day of the dead practices and use of the Mexican wishbone cactus which Cathy Dineen uses as a starting point for her sculptural and hand painted pots. Doirin Saurus looks at wooden carvings made in OAXACA for her stoneware characters.

Kate Walsh’s painted ceramic bowls are inspired by the ninth century frescoes of BONAMPAK considered to be the most elaborate sophisticated and well preserved murals of Mayan culture. In her vessel forms Gillian Murray connects with the importance of animals in both cultures.

And in exploring the Mexican tree of Life, Sarah Murphy depicts the celebration of life and memories from an Irish perspective using forms reminiscent of traditional Mexican culture. The show will run until March 28, 2026 at Cahir Arts. This exhibition is free to see and well worth a look, so pop in to Cahir Arts have a look for yourself.
