Plans to create a new gym and indoor padel courts at a busy retail park in north Tipperary have been given the green light.
Tipperary County Council has granted planning permission for a development at Springfort Retail Park in Nenagh, where vacant space within an existing building will be converted into a fitness and sports facility.
The proposal, submitted by TBB Fitness Ltd, involves transforming unused first-floor space into a gymnasium alongside padel courts, a fast-growing racket sport that blends elements of tennis and squash.
Under the approved plans, the development will include a change of use for several areas of the building. A vacant “shell and core” unit on the first floor will become part of the new gym and sports space, while an existing play centre on the same level will also be repurposed to accommodate the facility.

Additional alterations will see offices on the second floor converted into storage and plant rooms to support the gym operation. Minor external changes and new signage are also included in the plans.
The project aims to bring new activity to currently unused sections of the building and introduce additional fitness and recreational amenities in the Nenagh area.
Padel has grown rapidly in popularity in recent years, with courts now appearing in a number of Irish towns and sports clubs as interest in the sport continues to expand.
Once completed, the new facility is expected to add to the range of leisure and fitness options available locally while making use of vacant retail park space.
