Grading disaster sees Tipp club held scoreless in County Hurling League clash last weekend

A remarkable and sobering scoreline emerged from Division 6, Group 2 of the opening round of the FBD Insurance County Hurling Leagues last weekend, as Ballingarry’s second string delivered a 5-25 to 0-0 win over fellow South Tipperary club Marlfield.

With clubs returning to action across the county, heavy results can sometimes occur in the early rounds, but the margin here, coupled with the rarity of a team being held scoreless over 60 minutes, naturally draws attention to how divisions are balanced.

The structure of the county leagues has long been a topic of discussion, and results like this highlight some of the ongoing challenges in ensuring consistently competitive games for all teams. Striking that balance is not straightforward, particularly in a system where participation can vary from year to year.

League gradings can fluctuate depending on a number of factors, including teams opting in or out, as well as the impact of promotion and relegation from previous seasons. All of this makes placing teams at the right level a complex task.

In this instance, Ballingarry’s second team, operating at Junior A level, came up against a Marlfield side that has competed at Junior B for a number of years, which likely played a role in the outcome.
