Tipperary County Council has been approached by a private landowner interested in opening a caravan and camper van park in Carrick-on-Suir, the monthly meeting of Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District councillors was told.
The council’s EU Just Transition Fund Tourism Activator Mairead Winters informed councillors that a person with a piece of land in Carrick-on-Suir has come forward looking to see if it is worth developing such a park and if there would planning issues.
She revealed the approach during her report to the meeting in Carrick Town Hall on the council’s work in promoting tourism in the county.

Ms Winters said the caravan park in Clonmel where caravan and camper van owners pay €10 per night to park while they visit the town was working very well and there is private sector interest across all the municipal districts in similar projects.
Carrick-on-Suir’s two councillors Kieran Bourke and David Dunne heartily welcomed the news.
Cllr Bourke said he was delighted someone in the private sector with a site was interested in developing such a facility as there aren’t enough hotel and guesthouse bedrooms in Carrick-on-Suir.
“An awful lot of people today have their own camper vans and they travel from festival to festival but unfortunately there is no place to park a caravan in Carrick during the Clancy Brothers Festival.
“I will be pushing to have that facility come to our town sooner rather than later,” the Fianna Fáil councillor added.
Cllr Dunne, who is Cathaoirleach of Carrick MD, said there was a demand for a caravan and camper van park in Carrick and it was great someone from the private sector is looking into developing such a site.
He agreed with Cllr Bourke about the lack of guest bedrooms in the town. “The biggest problem we have in Carrick is the lack of beds for big events.”
