Senior Roads Engineer James Murray says the council will also need help if problems in the oil market continue.

If petrol and diesel prices continue their upward climb, Local Authorities will urgently need a lifeline from the government.

Tipperary County Council relies on a fleet of 260 vehicles and machines, burning through more than 800,000 litres of fuel annually. Soaring prices are already squeezing their budget.

The Cabinet is expected to discuss a support package for the haulage industry today.
