A view of Carrick-on-Suir Town Clock from Sean Kelly Square
Tipperary County Council has secured a further €10,000 funding to repair and restore another section of Carrick-on-Suir’s 18th century town clock.
Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District councillors were informed of the latest Built Heritage Investment Scheme grant allocated for the project at their latest monthly meeting.
The grant will be used to repair and refurbish the timber louvres of the clock lantern.
District Administrator Marie Cox said the works will take place over the coming months.
Carrick-on-Suir Cllr Kieran Bourke welcomed the news of the funding at the meeting and expressed the hope the renovation of the clock will be completed this year.
Ms Cox explained it was a long term project of works listed on a conservation plan. She said the next stage after the louvres are restored is the renovation of the internal plaster work in the clock tower.
Cllr Bourke responded that refurbishing the exterior of the clock and its tower was the priority but it was great to hear the council has ambitions to also revamp the inside of the clock tower.
The Fianna Fáil councillor noted that with Kiersey Place beside the clock it would be great to see the inside of the clock tower used as a venue for events during Clancy Brothers Festival in the town each summer.
