Cllr Máirín McGrath, a member of Tipperary ETB and the Board of Management of Coláiste Dún Iascaigh, has warmly welcomed the news this morning that planning permission has been granted for a significant extension at the school. This marks a major step forward for education in Cahir.

This approval follows last week’s announcement of planning permission for a major upgrade of the school’s sports facilities, including a new athletics track, all‑weather pitch, enhanced track and field areas, a perimeter walkway with lighting, and new
paddle courts. These facilities will benefit the entire community as well as the school.

Tipperary County Council has now approved the proposal to add four major new educational extensions with a combined floor area of approximately 2,500 square metres.

These include a mix of single and two storey accommodation providing four SEN classrooms, six general classrooms, four specialist rooms and three Special Education Teacher rooms, along with two new technology preparation rooms and a dedicated storage extension.

Further improvements will include new vehicular entry gates, a redesigned service yard, enhancements to the school car park including additional spaces and a designated SEN set‑down area, two new covered bicycle shelters with relocation of existing ones, and a purpose built SEN play area and sensory garden.

The school currently accommodates 892 students and 100 staff. In recent years, Coláiste Dún Iascaigh has experienced significant growth in enrolment and is now one of Tipperary ETB’s largest and most rapidly developing schools.

The purpose of the planned extension is to ensure that the school continues to provide a high‑quality and well‑equipped learning environment for its expanding student population.

Cllr McGrath said: “This is a proud day for the school community. I want to acknowledge the hard work of the school management and leadership team under Principal Peter Creedon, the Board of Management, and the Tipperary ETB themselves, all of whom have worked tirelessly to bring this transformative project to this stage. I look forward to supporting the next phase as we work towards delivery.

The next challenge now is to ensure that the Department of Education provides the necessary funding for this major expansion, and both Deputy Mattie McGrath and I will continue to strongly advocate to secure that investment for Coláiste Dún Iascaigh.”

She continued: “I look forward to continuing to support the school with both planned developments, and I commend all involved for their dedication to delivering these progressive, game changing enhancements to the school’s facilities and overall learning environment.”
