Premier County set for key football and hurling openers as championship season begins

The countdown to championship season officially began in Thurles on Thursday, March 26th, as the 2026 Munster GAA Championships across hurling, football, camogie and ladies football were launched at FBD Semple Stadium and the adjoining Dome.

A strong Tipperary presence underlined the significance of the occasion on home soil, with county representatives from all four codes in attendance.

Ronan Maher, Paudie Feehan, Mairead Eviston and Laura Morrissey were present as Munster’s championship summer was formally unveiled.

Munster GAA Chairman Tim Murphy addressed those gathered, alongside Munster Camogie Chairperson Christine Ryan and Munster Ladies Football President Lorraine Royle, each outlining their hopes for a competitive and vibrant provincial campaign.

Adding further weight to the occasion, Paul Flynn delivered a special address, reflecting on his decorated career with Waterford while highlighting the enduring appeal and intensity of the Munster Championships.

Tipperary’s footballers will be first into action, travelling to face Waterford in the Munster Senior Football Championship quarter-final on Sunday, April 12th at Fraher Field in Cappoquin.

Attention will quickly turn to hurling, with Tipperary handed a marquee opening fixture in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship.

On Sunday, April 19th, Tipperary welcome Cork to Thurles in a repeat of the 2025 All-Ireland Final, a tie that is certain to generate huge anticipation among supporters.
