Carrick-on-Suir's Edmund Rice Secondary School’s Under 17 soccer team beat Intermediate School, Kilorglin 2-1 to clinch the Under 17 FAI Schools Munster Junior Trophy in Fermoy.

Glenn Bompoh’s late strike settled the tie on the day between two fantastic school sides.

The Carrick-on-Suir team controlled possession of the ball from the start of the match and applied sustained pressure to the opposition. The first chance of the match fell to Glenn Bompoh who came within inches of opening the scoring, cutting inside his marker before firing narrowly over from a tight angle.

As the half progressed, Kilorglin came back into the game and were unlucky not to score on two occasions with Sean Doherty striking the post and the ERSS goalkeeper making a fine save. As the clock ticked towards half time, ERSS player Tom Gahan danced through the Kilorglin defence only to be denied by the goalkeeper’s save.

In the second half, ERSS took the lead on the 50th minute mark. Jay O’Gorman delivered a precise cutback to Ferdia Geoghegan who showed great composure to guide the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.

Moments later, Tom Gahan had a chance to double ERSS’ lead but was denied by a last ditch tackle. Kilorglin responded strongly to the setback and piled forward in search of an equaliser. The Kerry team’s persistence finally paid off with ten minutes remaining with Cade Jameson scoring to level the match.

But just two minutes later ERSS regained the lead. Jay O’Gorman made space down the flank and delivered a dangerous ball into the box, where Glenn Bompoh was on hand to finish neatly into the corner.

The full time whistle then sounded and scenes of joy erupted as the Carrick team were crowned Munster champions. The trophy was presented to ERSS Captain Jay O’Gorman by FAI Schools Munster Chairman Aiden Twomey.
