Edmund Rice Secondary School’s Under 15 soccer team were narrowly defeated in the FAI Schools Munster Under 15 Minor Trophy final losing to Scoil Mhuire agus Íde of Newcastle West in a 5-4 penalty shoot-out after both sides finished the game level 2-2.
Goalkeeper Zach O’Keeffe was hero on the day for Scoil Mhuire Agus Ide as his fine save in the penalty shoot-out secured the Munster title for the Limerick school.
Scoil Mhuire Agus Íde scored the opening goal a few minutes after kick-off. The goal sparked ERSS Carrick-on-Suir into life and they responded with a series of attacks from Tom Gahan, whose header drifted wide of the goal and his shot was saved brilliantly by the Scoil Mhuire Agus Íde goalkeeper.
As the clock ticked towards half-time, ERSS were awarded a penalty. Darragh Revutsky stepped up to convert the penalty, levelling the game at 1–1 going into the break.
Scoil Mhuire Agus Íde regained the lead in the second half to make it 2-1 but ERSS soon equalised to make it 2-2.
Tom Gahan scored the equaliser for the Carrick school with an excellent strike from outside the box.
Both sides pushed forward in search of a winner, but their strong defences meant neither team could break the deadlock and the game ended 2-2 in normal time. Extra time didn’t break the deadlock and the match was decided by the dreaded penalty shoot-out.
