L to R new owners Patricia & Derek Cagney accepted keys to John Quirke Jewellers from John Quirke last Saturday
Last weekend saw the end of an era in Cahir as well-known local man and jeweller John Quirke handed over the keys of his jewellers’ premises to a new owner.
John met with new proprietors Patricia & Derek Cagney on Saturday to officially pass over the keys and along with new owners, met with locals to say goodbye after 50 years in business in Cahir.

John said “after 50 years and surviving through several recessions, wars and a pandemic I’ve still enjoyed every minute and will be forever thankful for the overwhelming support that has been received for over a half a century in Cahir.
From the support received from loyal local & surrounding areas, the Clubs, Committees and organisations all over the county, the many tourists, visitors & holiday makers and not forgetting our Twin Town of Scarborough in England who we have been fortunate enough to exchange visits with on occasion over the years, we have been lucky, and to be part of so many sporting, cultural, musical and historical social occasions will be fondly remembered.”
John along with his wife Margaret and staff Trish and Antony wish to say thank you to all those who worked with them at various times over the years, or have gone on to college or different careers, they were delighted to have you or assist in any way.
The Jewellers will continue to trade under the Quirke’s Jewellers name and we can already see a hint of the fantastic improvements that new proprietors Patricia and Derek Cagney will carry out in the shop in its usual location of 14 Castle Street, while Quirke’s Trophies, also owned by Patricia & Derek will continue in the Glengall House location.

John Quirke finished by saying “we wish Patricia & Derek the very best of luck for the future and we hope that they continue to enjoy the support we have received from the local community as we have.”
I’m sure like myself, that everyone in Cahir and surrounding areas wish John & Margaret the very best in their retirement and thank them for 50 years of dedicated & loyal service to Cahir.
