A restored medieval tower house in Co Tipperary has been recognised at a national level after winning a prestigious heritage award.
Knockelly Castle, located near Fethard, was named the overall winner at the 2026 Historic Houses of Ireland Heritage Awards. The awards celebrate the conservation and sustainable use of historic properties across the country.
Dating from the 15th century, the castle is a traditional Irish tower house, complete with defensive features such as a surrounding bawn, corner turrets and a fortified entrance. The structure has undergone extensive restoration in recent years.

Judges said the project stood out for its careful approach to conservation, as well as its long-term vision for the building’s use. The awards place a strong emphasis on preserving historic properties while ensuring they remain viable and relevant.
The owners of Knockelly Castle undertook the restoration over a number of years, working to retain original features while stabilising and upgrading the structure.
Historic Houses of Ireland said the award recognises projects that demonstrate innovation in conservation and contribute to the protection of Ireland’s architectural heritage.
The win places Knockelly Castle among a small number of historic properties nationally to be recognised for excellence in restoration and reuse.
