Tipperary motorists could soon benefit, with up to 50 new parking spaces set to be created in Thurles if expansion plans continue to progress.

The figure emerged following a query from Fianna Fáil councillor Kay Cahill Skehan at the April meeting of the Thurles Municipal District (MD), where she asked about the potential for additional parking at the Parnell Street car park.

During a discussion on the District Engineer’s Report for 2026, Cllr Cahill Skehan asked the MD “how many spaces will we be gaining” as part of a planned expansion to the car park .

In response, District Engineer Thomas Duffy said works are ongoing with his team to progress the expansion.

He said that “if it comes to pass”, they are “hoping” to deliver in excess of 40 additional spaces, with up to 50 potential new spots in the Parnell Street car park.

Mr Duffy explained that at its current stage, his team are working on reaching agreement with a local landowner. He noted that discussions are continuing in relation to securing the necessary land to allow the expansion to proceed.

News of progress on the Parnell Street extension follows the September 2025 MD meeting, when councillors sought an update on future expansion plans for the car park following an enquiry from Cllr Cahill Skehan.

At that time, the matter was with the council’s legal team and councillors were told any expansions would not proceed until at least 2026.

Mr Duffy said discussions remain ongoing with the landowner to progress any possible expansion of the Parnell Street car park in Thurles.
