Quality of Tipperary water supply called into question in latest research

Urgent action is required to address the high number of boil water notices in Tipperary, according to the chair of the Tipperary Branch of the Social Democrats, Brendan Guckian.

Figures obtained by the Social Democrats show that since the beginning of 2021, 19 boil water notices have been issued for Tipperary. This is the second highest nationally, just behind Waterford with 20 notices in the same period. Of the 19 issued in Tipperary, there were a number of repeat notices on the same supply.

The Galtee region, Glenary, Carrick-On-Suir (Lingaun River) and the Horse & Jockey water supply zones were issued with two notices each during this period.

The largest populations impacted in Tipperary were the Galtee region, which supplies water to over 15,000 people, and Glenary, which supplies over 10,000 people.

In fact, the Galtee region ranked 8th largest nationally in terms of populations impacted. In total, 19 local authorities out of 31 had boil water notices issued since the beginning of 2021.

The Tipperary Branch of the Social Democrats are calling for a renewed focus on the water supply in Tipperary and will be engaging with Irish Water to understand their plans to address the underlying issues with Tipperary’s water supply.
