Dozens of motorists caught speeding during first two hours of National Slow Down Day

DOZENS of motorists have been caught speeding across the country on what is expected to be one of the busiest days of the year on Irish roads.

According to gardai, the speed of 5,228 vehicles was checked during the first two hours of National Slow Down Day which began at 7am this Friday.,

During that time, GoSafe vans detected 40 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

Some of the notable detections, which have been highlighted, include.

*A motorist detected travelling at 83km/h in a 60km/h zone at Dublin Road, Co Cavan
*A motorist detected travelling at 130km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N4 at Greatdown, The Downs, Co Westmeath
*A motorist detected travelling at 145km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M8 at Ballinglanna North, Kilworth, Co Cork

In the first 2 hours of National Slow Down Day, GoSafe checked the speed of 5,228 vehicles

40 vehicles were detected for speeding

National Slow Down Day will continue until 7am on Saturday.

An Garda Síochána is continuing to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.
