'Young fella' caught speeding on busy Tipperary road tests positive for cannabis

Learner-driver arrested and vehicle seized following detection in the Birdhill area

'Young fella' caught speeding on busy Tipperary road tests positive for cannabis

The youth, according to gardai, also failed a roadside drug test which confirmed the presence of cannabis in his system

A learner-driver who tested positive for cannabis after he was stopped for speeding close to a Tipperary village is facing prosecution for multiple road traffic offences.

Highlighting the incident on social media, gardai say members of the Tipperary Roads Policing Unit were on duty in the Birdhill area recently when they detected a car which was being driven at 89km/h in a 50km/h zone.

According to the post, it was subsequently established by gardai that the "young fella" was a learner driver who was unaccompanied (by a qualified driver) when stopped and who did not have 'L plates' displayed on the vehicle he was driving.

The youth, according to gardai, also failed a roadside drug test which confirmed the presence of cannabis in his system.

"That's what we're up against," said a garda spokesperson who confirmed the vehicle in question was seized under the provisions of the Road Traffic Act.

An analysis of samples taken from the driver will determine if he will face a drug-driving charge.
