Hundreds of vehicles caught speeding in collision blackspots in just 24 hours

Hundreds of vehicles have been caught speeding in collision blackspots over the past 24 hours. 

That's according to Gardaí, who confirmed GoSafe has checked 137,575 vehicles for speed over the past day, with 353 speeding detections logged. 

GoSafe operates safety cameras across Ireland in high-visibility vehicles, primarily on roads with a history of collisions; these are known as Speed Enforcement Zones. 

Significant detections over the past 24 hours include a vehicle travelling 181km/h in a 100km/h zone in Kildare, 154km/h in a 120km/h zone in Galway, 120km/h in an 80km/h zone in Donegal, and 86km/h in a 60km/h zone in Dublin. 

According to Gardaí, 34 more people have lost their lives on Irish roads this year compared to the same period last year, with a total of 155 fatalities. 

Nineteen people have lost their lives in October 2023 alone. 

Fifty three drivers have died on Irish roads since January 1 2023, with 38 pedestrians, 32 passengers, 4 e-scooter drivers/passengers, 22 motorcyclists, and 5 cyclists.
