Doctors arrested on suspicion of defrauding HSE released without charge

The men were questioned at a garda station in Dublin

Two doctors who were arrested as part of a fraud investigation have been released without charge, gardai have confirmed.

The two males, aged in their mid 40s and late 50s, were arrested in the Dublin Region on Wednesday on suspicion of alleged fraud against the Exchequer and the HSE.

It has been widely reported that both are GPs who previously worked at a medical practice in the Midlands.

In a statement, confirming the arrests, a garda spokesperson said: "The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau are investigating the complaint of alleged fraud that took place between 2017 and 2019. Investigating gardaí have arrested the two men on suspicion of an offence contrary to Section 71 Criminal Justice Act 2006."

In an update, this Thursday morning, gardai confirmed that the men, who were detained under the provisions of Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007, have now been released.

Gardaí say the investigation is ongoing and that a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
