ALERT: Garda warn people not to click fake funeral links

Gardaí have issued a warning about fake social media links targeting funerals, in an attempt to scam people who wish to watch funeral services online. 

These links have been posted on many high profile funerals, and particularly tragic cases. 

The recent funeral of young Matthew James Healy who died in tragic circumstances in Waterford was one of those funerals targeted, despite the funeral not being streamed live. 

The links, which claim to be to be for a live stream of the funeral, are believed go to a range of scam sites, including 'phishing' operations that ask for emails and personal information.

Gardaí have warned people not to click these links and be wary of them. 

"We are aware of such posts circulating on social media. An Garda Síochána advises members of the public to not engage with these posts," a garda spokesperson said.

"Anyone who wishes to watch a funeral service via live stream should revert to the parish or diocese directly.

"Anyone who believes they have been the victim of fraud should report it to their local Garda station," the spokesperson said.
